otonVPN: A Privacy-First VPN for Secure, Speedy Browsing Keywords ProtonVPN, VPN, privacy, Secure Core, WireGuard, Swiss jurisdiction, no-logs, Tor over VPN, NetShield, streaming, P2P Description An overview of ProtonVPN, focusing on its privacy features, technical strengths such as Secure Core and WireGuard support, available plans (including a free tier), common use cases, and the pros and cons to help readers decide if it fits their needs. Content ProtonVPN is a virtual private network service developed by Proton Technologies AG, the same company behind ProtonMail. Built with privacy and security as core principles, ProtonVPN aims to provide robust encryption and protective features that help users maintain anonymity online, secure connections on public Wi‑Fi, and access geo‑restricted content. Privacy and jurisdiction One of ProtonVPN’s most notable attributes is its Swiss base of operations. Switzerland has strong privacy laws and is outside the direct jurisdiction of EU and US surveillance alliances, a selling point for privacy-conscious users. ProtonVPN also maintains a strict no‑logs policy — meaning it does not record user activity — and its infrastructure and code have been independently audited and are largely open source, which increases transparency and trust. Key features - Secure Core: ProtonVPN’s multi‑hop architecture routes traffic through privacy-friendly countries (such as Switzerland and Iceland) before exiting to the internet, providing an extra layer against network-level attacks and tracking. - Protocol support: ProtonVPN supports modern protocols like WireGuard for fast and efficient connections, along with OpenVPN and IKEv2, offering flexibility for different use cases and platforms. - Tor over VPN: Users can route traffic directly into the Tor network from specific ProtonVPN servers, simplifying access to Onion services without running a separate Tor client. - NetShield: An integrated DNS‑level blocker for ads, trackers, and malware domains that helps reduce tracking and keep browsing cleaner and safer. - Kill switch & split tunneling: Built‑in safety features ensure that your traffic doesn’t leak if the VPN connection drops and allow selective routing of apps through the VPN. Plans and accessibility ProtonVPN offers a free tier with limited countries and speeds, a useful option for basic privacy needs. Paid plans unlock faster servers, access to Secure Core, streaming‑optimized and P2P servers, and higher simultaneous device allowances. Apps are available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, plus manual setup guides for routers and other devices. Performance and use cases Thanks to WireGuard and a well‑maintained server network, ProtonVPN delivers competitive speeds for general browsing, streaming, and torrenting on Plus‑level servers. It’s a solid choice for users who want a privacy-focused VPN that still performs well for everyday media consumption and secure file sharing. It’s also commonly chosen by journalists, activists, and travellers who require reliable access to restricted resources while preserving anonymity. Pros and cons Pros: Strong privacy stance, Swiss jurisdiction, Secure Core multi‑hop, open‑source apps, Tor integration, free tier. Cons: Paid plans are pricier than some competitors, and Secure Core can reduce speed due to multi‑hop routing. Conclusion ProtonVPN balances privacy, transparency, and performance, making it a compelling option for users who prioritize security and trustworthiness. Whether you need basic protection on public Wi‑Fi or advanced features like Tor over VPN and multi‑hop routing, ProtonVPN offers a range of options to meet those needs.
